Working in the retail furniture industry in Northwest Arkansas, Jesse Smyers was dismayed that area stores had no truly modern pieces, for which customers had to go to the coasts, Dallas, or Chicago. He created Lacuna Modern in November 2003 to address that lack.

His passion for contemporary and classic modern form has led him to seek out exciting designers in Europe and across the United States, such as (Minotti, Molteni & C, Moroso, Artemide, Flos, Richard Schultz). In the new showroom in Fayetteville, the purest examples from a range of the best designers working in the 20th and 21st centuries inspire buyers with possibilities for their homes, and illustrate the art of selection in creating comfortable and beautiful environments.

More than a furniture store, Lacuna offers visions of a modern lifestyle, including lighting, art, floor coverings, books, accessories, closet and kitchen systems, and even models of prefabricated homes. Our philosophy is based on the ways our surroundings influence not only where we sit, but also our moods, health, ability to manage time, and state of mind. Seating that supports the body correctly, kitchens that work, lighting that soothes, art that inspires, fabrics and surfaces that reward the touch—these contribute to an environment that functions for you rather than vice versa.

Many studios we represent are minimalist in that they strip away superfluous adornment, allowing each piece to perform exactly as it should. Instead of ornament, they offer purity of line and form. The designers have thought deeply about what a chair is and should be,
what table height makes work and play optimally functional, how a light creates a calming mood.

The new Lacuna is the result of years of planning and intense collaboration with architect and builder. We have tried to provide an experience unlike any now available in the multi-state region we serve, so you might feel the serenity and optimism provided by clean and efficient design. Unlike many showrooms, Lacuna is open to the public as well as to the trade. Jesse and staff are available to help plan your space, research the many catalogs and websites you may choose from, and install. We hope that your visit to Lacuna will delight, enlighten, educate, and serve your needs.
